Collingwood is an absolutely gorgeous and elegant place to visit, but to decorate? It's even better! In December of 2007 I got the chance to do just that.
Walking inside, past the entry, you become engulfed in the library, surrounded by century old books, books that line each wall of the large room, and this is the room, to my absolute surprise and delight, that I am to decorate.
It was exciting and overwhelming all at the same time but I knew I had the tools and the knowledge to make this room even greater than it already was. My goal? To transfer this library into a welcoming Christmas stage for an upcoming event. I take a long look around and wonder.. What should go where.. but then I just knew, I didn't take much time getting my team together and just decorating like I've never decorated before.
Trees, stockings, floral picks, wreath hangers, and imagination. In the pictures below you'll see exactly what I did and how wonderful it looked.
Enjoy!
Holidays is about family, that's why I enlisted the support of my sister in this project. Behind us we placed a wreath decorated with christmas lights in front of a mirror and created a stunning look.
Take a glass bowl, layer white Christmas lights and ball ornaments inside it and create a conversational piece for your own parties.
Ribbon has always been a favorite of mine and large bold ribbon can make a statement when used on a tree instead of regular garland. Find a color and pattern that suits your style and decorate! Remember.. Simplify!
I used a couple of books and old suitcases that I found laying around my house to heighten the items in this display. Its so easy, and inexpensive but creates a wonderful visual effect which enhances the beauty of the individual pieces.
Instead of small and unnoticable ornaments, use large and bold items. Don't be afraid to use items that aren't even intended for this particular purpose. The stars I have floating in this tree are actually connected to a wreath hanger which is hidden inside the branches. The large Merry Christmas sign is actually intended for baskets that hang on the front door, but instead I integrated it into this tree and I think the statement I created is bold and eye-catching.
Just because you love a particular color doesn't mean your entire display needs to be just that. Remember to choose accent colors to integrate into your displays. The gold is beautiful alone but coupled with the silver and green, it's gorgeous!
We want to thank Collingwood for allowing us the opportunity to decorate such a wonderful place. If you ever visit the DC area, please remember to check Collingwood Library & Museum out. You won't be disappointed!
